Position/Job Description

 

PRINCIPAL @ Milton Elementary 

 

 

 

 

Purpose:  To serve as the educational leader, responsible for implementing and managing the policies, regulations, and procedures of the Trimble County Board of Education to ensure that all students are supervised in a safe student-centered learning environment that meets the approved curricula and mission of the school and district. Inherent in the position are the responsibilities for planning, curriculum development, program evaluation, extracurricular activities, personnel management, financial management, emergency procedures, resource scheduling, and facilities operation.

Reports To: Superintendent and/or Assistant Superintendent

Qualifications:

  1. A master’s degree or higher and the required Kentucky certificate for the assigned position.
  2. At least five – seven (5 - 7) years of successful teaching and/or administrative experience.
  3. Hold a valid driver’s license.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to use computers for word processing, data management, and telecommunications.
  5. The ability to communicate effectively with students, parents and faculty.
  6. Demonstrate excellent leadership and organizational skills and the ability to motivate people.

Specific Performance Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional

  1. Organize, manage, evaluate, and supervise effective and clear procedures for the operation and functioning of the entire school consistent with the vision, mission, values and goals of the school and district, including instructional programs, extracurricular activities, discipline systems, financial management, facilities maintenance, program evaluation, personnel management, office operations, emergency procedures, and community relations.
  2. Collect and analyze data regarding the needs and achievement of students, using the information to design, modify, and implement services and programs.
  3. Supervise the instructional programs of the school, evaluating lesson plans and observing classes on a regular basis to encourage the use of a variety of instructional strategies and materials consistent with research on learning and child growth and development.
  4. Encourage the use of and instruct teachers in the use of strategies and tasks that require critical thinking, problem solving and creativity, inquiry, and a variety of methods for students to demonstrate performance and achievement.
  5. Organize and implement a system for the evaluation and selection of equipment and instructional materials that are designed to meet the core curriculum standards.
  6. Organize and supervise procedures for identifying and addressing special needs of students including health related concerns, and physical, emotional, and learning disabilities, coordinating the resources of the school and community to assist the student and family.
  7. Provide opportunities for effective professional development that address the needs of the instructional programs and needs of the staff, including workshops, conferences, visitations, and sessions in which the staff shares successful practices and strategies.
  8. Organize and supervise a comprehensive program of athletics, extracurricular, and co-curricular activities to complement and support the curriculum content standards.
  9. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by their supervisor. 
  10. All work responsibilities are subject to having performance goals and/or targets established as part of the annual evaluation plan and professional growth plan.

Personnel Management

  1. Supervise all personnel assigned to the building, establishing clear expectations for role responsibilities, and performance to ensure that all job responsibilities are met and exceeded.
  2. Organize and nurture an effective leadership team with clear expectations for role, responsibilities, and performance, holding each individual accountable for the area of assignment.
  3. Ensure that personnel evaluation procedures are accomplished in a fair and consistent manner that encourages accountability, growth and excellence, in accordance with the Certified Evaluation Plan and Board Policy.
  4. Recommend to the Superintendent the renewal, dismissal or other actions for all personnel assigned to the school; recommend personnel to fill all vacant positions in the school following the recruitment and selection procedures. 
  5. Student Discipline and Safety

  1. Provide and supervise in a fair and consistent manner effective discipline and attendance systems with high standards in accordance with due process and other laws and regulations, ensuring a safe, orderly environment that encourages students to take responsibility for behavior.
  2. Incorporate procedures for the early identification of potentially disruptive students and the conditions that create or enhance unacceptable behavior and implement programs to address such conditions.
  3. Implement schedules and procedures for the supervision of students in non-classroom areas, including before and after school, bus loading and unloading, athletic events and cafeteria.
  4. File all required reports regarding violence, vandalism, attendance and discipline matters in a timely fashion.
  5. Establish a system of notifying the parents as soon as possible in the event of illness, accident or injury to a student; summoning a physician or other medical help and following their professional direction in the event neither parent can be contacted; contacting law enforcement officials; and taking the student to a hospital emergency room in the event a physician or ambulance is not available.Plant Security and Improvement

  1. Implement procedures that create and maintain attractive, organized, functional, healthy, clean, and safe facilities, with proper attention to the visual, acoustic, and thermal environments.
  2. Regularly inspect all facilities to ensure compliance with all applicable codes and regulations including access for individuals with handicapping conditions.
  3. Develop clearly understood procedures and provide regular drills for emergencies and disasters, following state, local and district guidelines.
  4. Design and put into action a program of building security which takes into account week-ends, vacations and after-school use by in-school and outside groups within the existing Board Policy.
  5. Perform monthly maintenance inspections submitting the safety checklists and other facility reports as required.Finance

  1. Analyze all financial data and maintain a system of strict accounting for school funds that is in accordance with KRS 156.070 (Red Book) and which documents strict accountability for school funds from the source of collection to the final distribution for school purposes.
  2. Maintain an up-to-date inventory of classroom supplies, books, equipment and furniture.
  3. Approve all purchases in accordance with state, district and school policies and procedures.Professional

  1. Maintain visibility with students, staff, parents, and the community, attending school and community functions regularly to demonstrate a genuine interest in the students and staff.
  2. Organize and maintain a public relations system for the school that consistently celebrates and informs parents and the community of the accomplishments of students and staff.
  3. Communicate regularly will parents, seeking their support and advice, creating a cooperative relationship to support their child in school.
  4. Maintain effective communications with agencies and resources outside of the school, including employers, colleges, and high schools in the area and in the athletic conference.
  5. Maintain positive, cooperative, and mutually supportive relationships with the central administration, parents and representatives of resource agencies with the community.
  6. Use effective communication and presentation skills when addressing students, staff, parents and the community.
  7. Represent the school and district at community, state and professional meetings.
  8. Complete in a timely fashion all records and reports as required by law and regulation or as requested by Superintendent or designee.
  9. Answer correspondence promptly.
  10. Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties and use discretion in sharing such information within legal confines.
  11. Hold regular staff meetings and serve, as appropriate, on staff committees.
  12. Communicate with the Superintendent or designee regularly about the needs, successes, and general operation of the school.
  13. Maintain and improve professional competence.
  14. Demonstrate punctuality and dependability.
  15. Carry out assignments in a timely manner without undue monitoring and checking.
  16. Adhere to the Trimble County Board of Education Policies and Procedures.
